The Ivy

Room

Research / Brand Construction

The Ivy Room is the product of a self-initiated independent study. I am fascinated by nature, how nature affects us, and ultimately how it is a part of us. This luxury parlour improves the lives of it’s consumers by allowing them to invite flora into their spaces. The Ivy Room aims to make nature recognized as a vital piece of the equation for motivated, inspired, efficient people in every field in accordance with the triple bottom line. Additionally, according to biophilia, humans have an innate connection to nature that could help bring life to an otherwise dull office setting.

Process

The Back Story

I love plants. I think they are beautiful, they bring life to my spaces, and any chance I get I try to keep them around. There's just one issue.

I couldn't keep a single one alive.

This was awful, I did everything I could. I researched, did my due diligence about plant maintenance, and I wasn't doing much better. Around the time when I was considering how to design a very realistic fake plant, I got help from a local nursery who told me exactly what plants to get based on where the plant would be, how often I wanted to water it, and the kind of sunlight it would get.

I was stoked about this, but how could I explore it?

Opportunity

Working with what I had, a single conversation at the nursery, I started out to see if anything was here to research. I talked to everyone who would listen to me about plants. Can you keep a plant alive? How often do you water it? Do you feel like a complete failure when it dies?

I found a friend, they have lots of plants. They actually have close to twenty plants, close to the number of plants I have killed. They advised me to think about how plants are easy to care for if you have a basic understanding of the plant and how it works (they also suggested I get an air plant).

During my research I uncovered another interesting direction. The triple bottom line is an accounting framework that incorporates three dimensions of performance: social, environmental and financial. This differs from traditional reporting frameworks as it includes ecological (or environmental) and social measures that can be difficult to assign appropriate means of measurement. This is often referred to as the three P's: people, planet, and profit.

The Study

The very first task involved looking for a workspace to run a trial for my independent study. Basically, I needed an innovative workspace that was willing to let my team and me come in and distribute plants to the employees. The plants come with care instructions, are totally free, and were chosen in accordance with my research about the best plants for an office environment.

What I would needed from the workspace varied depending on how much they wanted to participate.

Ideally we would:

1. Take a control survey before the plant delivery

2. Take photos of the space before and after

3. Do a 3 month follow up survey

Like all experiments, it is important that the subjects remain unaware of the purpose of the experiment until after it is over. So management would have to work with me to make sure all of this runs smoothly.

Data

Total Surveys Collected: 31

Of the people surveyed, all of them have two things in common.

1. They like their desk

2. They get distracted

3. They were excited to receive a plant

The average respondent takes a break every 1-2 hours for 20 minutes, they feel like they aren't doing their best work at their desk, and is easily distracted (this is not calculated into the breaks they take).

After 2 weeks, the average respondent saw an improvement in their personal fulfillment at work, and felt they were more productive in general. Not all participants responded to the follow up study, but of the ones who did, 100% of people kept the plant alive, and about 96% of people felt like having a plant improved their mood at work.
